What is Artisans in the Hills?
Artisans in the Hills is an online gallery for buying and selling contemporary arts and crafts, skilfully hand crafted, or restored items, and links to suppliers of materials. It also includes a gallery directory of rural tea rooms and farm shops, and details of art and craft events, open studios, and workshops. Each artisan, or group of artisans, have their own gallery on the Artisans in the Hills website which they can update themselves (with support and training if required) at any time.
What is a gallery on Artisans in the Hills website?
Depending on your budget and needs we have four gallery options.
1. The Customised Gallery consists of 4 pages; an information and profile page up to 150 words, a photo gallery of up to 30 images of your work, events and workshops, and a contact/payment page. You are also given an individual URL address i.e. www.artisansinthehills/username.co.uk as well as business cards with the Artisans in the Hills logo and your URL address.
2. The Gallery Directory which includes a link to your own external website, an image, contact details, plus 50 words describing your work.
3. An advertisement box is a box or banner with your advertisement which appears on the top of the page relevant to your business which visitors can see and click to be directed to your external website.
4. The Top 30 items are similar to an advertisement box, but are reserved solely for the Artisans who have a gallery on Artisans in the Hills. They are designed to promote a particular piece of work or event and appear on the 'home page' and link to the Artisan's gallery.
- Pieces of work designed and made by your own craftsmanship.
- Items that have been restored such as pictures, sculptures, furniture, lighting etc.
- Artisanian food and drink.
- Commercial art and craft supplies e.g. tools, clay, wood, glass, stone, ribbon, card, beads, fabric etc
- Details of workshops being held that relate directly to your work.
- Your studio open days with times, map and address.
- Your tea rooms or farm shop in a rural area.

What is the Customised Gallery?
We use a 'content management system' which means you can have access any time to the administration area of your gallery to upload new photographs, edit text, adjust pricing and update any new events and promotions. You choose a username and password which allows you to login into your administration area. An online manual will be supplied to help you. You can also call or email us for help, training or advice.
If you have a Customised Gallery you will automatically be listed in the Gallery Directory and your work displayed in the showcase.
Page 1 - Your home page 'The Artisan' (1 image and a maximum of 150 words).
We encourage all artisans displaying their work to provide information about their skills, work and experience as buyers will be interested in the originality of the work and the manner in which it is produced. If you use eco-friendly work processes, so please tell buyers because many of them will be particularly interested in supporting the eco-friendly ethos. Remember that a picture paints a thousand words so use an image if you can.
Page 2 - Photograph gallery
This is where you display images of your work. Images should be professional looking, and photographed individually or against an appropriate environment. Up to 30 images can be displayed.
Remember customers should know exactly what they are buying.
- All items must have a title, description, photograph, price and any instruction information.
- The postage and packing costs must be clearly shown at reasonable rates for the item.
- Baskets and other containers that are handmade are welcome, but not if filled with non handmade items, these cannot be displayed.
- Work and items shown in the gallery must be available for purchase unless specifically and clearly notated.
Page 3 - Workshops and events
Please let customers know if you have a studio and accept visitors, if you run your own workshops, or your work is displayed in exhibitions, fairs, or other local venues. Always make a note of how your visitors discovered you, even if they did not buy an item so you know whether or not Artisans in the Hills has helped your business. We want to find the most cost effective way to help you market your work.
Page 4 - Your contact details and payment page
This page gives the buyer your details i.e. your company name, postal address, contact number, links to another website, and a Google map. Finally, we encourage artisans to set up a PayPal business account for their galleries . Please take time out to understand and set up your PayPal account. www.paypal.co.uk which is a simple process.
Artisans in the Hills will give the buyer the opportunity to send these details to a friend, and other interested parties or social networks.
What is the Gallery Directory?
This will appear on the site like the listing below with 50 words, under the appropriate category e.g. Pottery & Ceramics, Wood, Textiles. One or more categories can be chosen.

If a customer clicks onto your website address they will be taken to your Web page(s) outside of Artisans in the Hills.
How do I register for a gallery?
Your gallery name becomes your web address (URL) therefore it must be written correctly to be recognised by the search engines. The text must be all lowercase, no capitals or symbols. There must be no spaces between words, but you can split a word by using hyphens e.g rainbowglass or rainbow-glass
Can I see what my web gallery looks like before I pay the fee?
Yes, once you have completed and submitted the registration form for either the customised gallery or directory, and received the welcome email and login information, you can go ahead and create your web gallery. To view your content, save first our content by clicking on to the submit or save icon, then go to the tap at the top the page 'View webpage' and click. A window will open, showing the public view of the site, find your category and view the layout of your entry. If you are satisfied, submit your payment by paypal or cheque once we receive your payment we will activate your gallery. Congratulations, welcome to our community of Artisans. A pictorial instruction manual is available under 'help' in your admin area.
What are the colourful icons at the side of an item or gallery?
These are the icons associated with different social or business networking groups i. e Facebook, Delicious, Reddit, Digg This, and Stumble upon. If you are a member of one of these groups and you wish to promote a gallery or an item to your friends or a group in that network, you simply click onto the icon, login and send a link to your contacts. This is a free and effective way to distribute your work or promote your gallery to a wider audience.
You can see an email icon, this enables you to send this page or item to another person.
What is an advertisement box /banner?
These are rolling advertisements appearing on the website at the top of the screen. The standard image is 60 X 60 pixels. It is usual for this advertisement to be 'clickable' sending browsers to the advertiser's gallery or external website. Advertisers purchasing this type of advertising want to promote an event, a particular item or piece of work from their gallery, a publication, their shop, or promote their supply of artisan's materials. We display advertisement banners for one month at a time at a cost.
These are similar to a banner but are reserved solely for people who have a gallery on Artisans in the Hills. The standard image is 60 X 60 pixels. The images are displayed on the 'home' page on 'Top 30' page. They give the artisan the opportunity to promote an event like workshops, an open studio, a particular item or piece of work from their gallery. How do I set up a gallery on Artisans in the Hills?
First you need to register. Go to 'sell your work' page, choose one of the three options to sell or advertise your work i.e. customised gallery, gallery directory or banner/box. Click the option box you want, complete and submit the registration form. You will receive a welcome email with a link to a login page. Choose a gallery name, this is normally your business name. Please choose this name carefully as it will become your URL address www.artisansinthehills/......co.uk and cannot be changed. Once this is submitted, a confirmation email will be sent to your email with an ACTIVATION LINK, this will take you to the login page for your Admin area, now you can start constructing your gallery or advertisement. Once payment has been received we will activate your gallery for your the public to view. Congratulations!
Is there an instruction manual on how to set up a gallery?
Yes, once you have registered for a gallery and login into your admin area, you will find pictorial instruction manual under the 'Help' menu.
Can children or young people have a gallery?
Yes, if you have skilfully creative work, Artisans under 18 years of age can sell their work, but they must have written permission of a parent or responsible adult who will be the account holder.
Can I have more than one gallery?
Yes, but each gallery must have a separate account and you must show on your profile all the galleries you have. If you have a customised gallery you will automatically be listed in the Gallery directory and your work in the showcase.
You can have a logo, manage the images and text on your gallery, but the template for each gallery remains the same. You will have a direct link to your gallery http://artisansinthehills/username.co.uk this enables you to promote your own gallery and direct customers to your work. Every item in your gallery will automatically be listed in the showcase and the categories you listed it in.
Can my gallery be listed in more than one category?
Yes, when completing your profile we ask you to state your primary category and a secondary category, for example, a metal sculpture with glass insets can be listed in metal and glass categories, and a piece of glass jewellery can be listed in the jewellery and glass categories.
What quality of photographs can I display?
The photographs must be taken with a digital camera. Images should be professional looking, and photographed individually against a white or an appropriate environment. They can be transferred across from 'My pictures' using the browser search button.

Will I be notified when my account is due for renewal?
Yes, we will notify you by email 4 weeks, and one week before your renewal date is due. You can close your gallery at anytime. Your details we be kept on our database in case you rejoin us at a more convenient time. There is no obligation to remain on the site, and you can remove a gallery at anytime, but the fee is not refundable if a gallery is closed within its payment year.

Can a group of Artisans have a gallery?
Your customised gallery can be a group gallery which can be set up under the following circumstances:-
Artisans with similar or complimentary skills may display items in a gallery under one partner account.
Such groups, who must know each other, can use a single Artisans in the Hills partner account to post their own individual work in one shared gallery, for example:
- Two or more potters share a gallery and display their own items.
- Two friends, a textile artist and a spinner, share a gallery as they are complimentary in nature.
- An art group e.g. The Dales Art Group may have several artists displaying work.
A group may not be an entity that represents multiple artists (e.g. an art gallery on the High Street, or shop, or an art agency/dealer). However, such businesses can take a listing in The Gallery Directory or purchase a banner advertisement.
The account profile must fully disclose accurate information about each person, their role in the gallery and the relationships between the members of the group.
A customised gallery account attracts a first year membership subscription of £120, but each year after a retaining fee of £49 per year.
An Artisan with a customised gallery will automatically be listed in the Gallery Directory and showcase. There is no obligation to remain on the site, and you can remove a gallery at anytime, but the fee is not refundable if a gallery is closed within its payment year.
Please note there will be no further charges on items listed, nor commission taken on items sold via the Artisans in the Hills

All new accounts are charged at the start of their membership, once you have registered and your login name (gallery name) and password have been sent to you, you are able to begin to set up your gallery immediately using the instruction manual (under the Help link)in your admin area. Once you have completed the content of your gallery, and pressed the submit button, your gallery is then ready for activation. Once your Artisans in the Hills have received your payment we will activate your gallery for your customers to view and buy your work online.

It allows buyers to securely use a credit card or their bank account to submit payment for Artisans in the Hills services. Artisans in the Hills is not affiliated with or subsidised by PayPal; they are an independent service. Please visit www.paypal.co.uk for information on their services.
We like to keep all our customers informed of new promotions, featured artisans, contemporary arts and crafts shows, date reminders, funding and business growth opportunities, and workshops. We also need your feedback on how the gallery for works you. We want new initiatives and ideas so we can enhance your the buying and selling opportunities and experiences. We do not intent to inundate you with loads of emails but to keep you informed a few times in the year.

On Artisans in the Hills, each transaction happens directly between the buyer and the Artisans / sellers. However, it is up to each Artisan / seller to determine certain sales terms for their own gallery. We recommend that artisans /sellers write their own gallery policies that outline their payment methods and terms and expected delivery time, postage and packing, cancellation polices, non arrival, and details on return returning or exchanging items. These policies are to ensure that transactions between the Artisan /seller and buyer goes smoothly.

This is a statement that informs the selling artisans and buyer the relationship between themselves and Artisans in the Hills. Artisans in the Hills is not a retailer; we serve only as an online website to connect new buyers to artisans displaying their work for sale. This means that when a customer decides to buy an item displayed on Artisans in the Hills from an artisan's gallery, they are entering into a direct business relationship with the artisan as an individual seller. Therefore payments must be sent directly to the seller and not to Artisans in the Hills.
